Franco-Moroccan Meeting to Discuss Security and Immigration Issues

Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit of Morocco welcomed French Minister of the Interior and Overseas, Gerald Darmanin, in Rabat on Monday. High-ranking officials from both countries were in attendance. According to a statement from the Moroccan Ministry of Interior, the ministers discussed issues of mutual interest, and explored ways to continue enhancing cooperation in line with the aspirations of King Mohammed VI of Morocco and French President Emmanuel Macron, aimed at an exceptional strategic partnership based on friendship and respect for shared interests.

The statement added that the ministers acknowledged the strong foundation created by security and immigration components in their bilateral relationship, which continues to strengthen through open dialogue at all levels. This relationship holds the potential to constructively overcome various circumstances.

After sharing their common vision of the regional and international landscape, the ministers confirmed their agreement on security risks and shared challenges, and agreed to strengthen channels of experience and information exchange to better anticipate threats, especially those linked to the criminal activities of terrorist groups and criminal networks, particularly in the Sahel and Sahara region.

In this context, Laftit mentioned the appropriate and comprehensive security approach adopted by Morocco to face security challenges, particularly terrorist threats. This comprehensive strategy combines field operations, the exchange of intelligence information, and preventative action, especially against extremism, and aspects of reintegration. He also referred to the comprehensive and humanitarian approach adopted by the Kingdom in the field of migration governance, in accordance with royal directives. He highlighted the importance of the ongoing efforts made by the Kingdom, and the positive role Morocco plays within the Permanent Joint Group on Migration, which serves as a mechanism for dialogue and coordination on this issue.

The French minister praised Morocco’s approach to facing security challenges and those related to migration, adding that this policy contributes to regional peace and stability, and positions the Kingdom as a reliable and credible partner on the international stage, particularly among Southern Mediterranean countries. The French Minister also thanked Moroccan security services for their field and logistical support in the preparation for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
