The Head of Morocco’s National Human Rights Council, Amina Bouayach, lauded the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture for its increasingly prominent role on a regional scale, contributing to the establishment of preventive action at the African level.

Bouayach highlighted the gradual evolution and growing integral experiences of the mechanism, alongside its focus on practical and tangible solutions, during a meeting on April 22, 2024.

Morocco, along with Denmark, Sweden, Argentina, and Burkina Faso, achieved an ‘A’ grade for effectively implementing recommendations from the Human Rights committee. This achievement came after Morocco adopted a special law to establish a national mechanism for the prevention of torture, which was placed under the supervision of the national human rights council in September 2019.

Mohammed Ben Ajiba, coordinator of the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture, confirmed that since its establishment, the mechanism conducted regular visits to more than 118 places of deprivation of liberty across all regions of the kingdom, and worked on making recommendations to enhance the prevention of torture and ill-treatment.

The National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture was established during the first session of the General Assembly of the National Human Rights Council on 21 September 2019, in accordance with the requirements of Law No. 15-76 concerning its internal reorganization.
