Liberian dies in Morocco of Ebola: Clarification

Heritage Liberia, Allafrica.com and many Liberian news outlets shared stories arguing that a Liberian citizen passed away of Ebola in Morocco.

Allafrica.com said that the Liberian Minister of Internal Affairs, “Mr. Morris Dukuly, has disclosed that a Liberian has died of the  deadly Ebola virus in Morocco.”

After conducting an investigation on this, we came up to the conclusion that the Liberian Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. Morris Dukuly, did not say anything on the matter. The piece of news is a lie that was concocted for some reason or another.

The truth is that a Liberian citizen has indeed passed away on the 29th of July while on a flight stop at the Mohammed VI airport of Morocco, but not of Ebola.

As the Moroccan Ministry of Health stated previously, the man passed away as a result of a heart attack, not of Ebola as it was reported by AllAfrica and other outlets.

The Ministry was more than clear in the official statement it issued following the the death of the man when saying the following:

“The Ministry of Health has conducted various medical tests in the Pasteur Institute of Morocco on the Liberian citizen’s body, in cooperation with many international bodies. The Ministry is happy to announce that the Liberian citizen did not suffer from Ebola. The Moroccan Ministry of Health is keen to reassure the public that Morocco is free of the Ebola fever epidemic.”

The Moroccan authorities are taking the Ebola threats very seriously and are following to the letter the measures of the International Health System, as shows the video underneath the article.

In fact, Morocco has strengthened the process of health monitoring at the level of access points since the outbreak of the deadly disease from Guinea.

More than that, Morocco remains on paper immune to Ebola as the only way that the virus could break to the country remains through the country’s international airports; the borders with Algeria are closed, while in the south of the country, a 2700 km-long wall is separating Morocco from other territories occupied by the Polisario Front.
