Rabat, Morocco (TMT)- The taxi driver of Marrakech who scammed a famous Youtuber has been sentenced to six months in prison and a fine of 500 dirhams. The driver forced the tourist to pay an exorbitant amount for transportation from the Marrakech-Menara International Airport to Jemaa el-Fnaa Square.

The victim, Simon Wilson, is a well-known influencer on social media with over one million followers on YouTube and 27 millions on TikTok. He filmed a video that quickly went viral, exposing the extortion of the taxi driver who demanded a large amount of money for the short journey, while the determined fare does not exceed 50 dirhams.

After the video was shared widely on social media and various YouTube channels, the public prosecutor ordered an investigation into the case. The judicial police listened to the driver’s statement in a legal report about what was mentioned in the video, which led to his arrest.

This case serves as a warning to all taxi drivers and professionals in the tourism sector to conduct themselves ethically and not engage in fraudulent activities that could harm the reputation of the industry and the country as a whole.
