Casablanca, Morocco (TMT)- The head of the Jewish community in Morocco, Serge Berdugo, after consultations with the Moroccan religious Jewish authority, well-known in Morocco under its Arabic acronym “Hakhamiya,” has issued a legal opinion to close all synagogues in Morocco.

In the wake of the ongoing spread of the coronavirus, Berdugo said in a statement that “health safety measures must be strictly adhered to, and that prayers should no see the gathering of more than ten believers at max.”

This decision comes a few hours after the closure of mosques around the kingdom, following a fatwa from Morocco’s Council of Ulemas.
