Moroccan authorities, at the image of its ministry of interior, are threatening to expel some Syrian refugees they accuse of “causing disruption to mosques and the faithful” in several towns.

Interior Minister Mohamed Hassad was reported saying in a statement: “Authorities will resort to the immediate expulsion of any offender in accordance with the law.”

The Ministry of Religious Affairs also published earlier a statement denouncing the behavior of “certain Syrian nationals…… who are causing disruption to mosques and the faithful,”

Syrians were “going to certain mosques in big towns where they are saying things that should not be said in places of worship”, it added.

Neither the Ministry of Interior Affairs’ statement nor the Ministry of Religious Affairs’ one referred explicitly to “Shia” or “Shiisme behaviors”. Yet, this is the most rational explanation to “causing disruption to mosques and faithful” and to “they are saying things that should not be said in places of worship”.

Al-Sabah, a well-known Moroccan media outlet, went in that sense as it said that the Moroccan government is worried about a “Shiite presence” and “reports of practices are disturbing doctrinal unity” in Sunni-majority Morocco.
