Moroccan Minister of Justice, Mr. Mustafa Ramid, met yesterday in Rabat Italien Minister of Justice Mr.Andrea Olando.

Both sides signed an agreement of cooperation in the field of Justice, especially a new law that will enable Italy send Moroccan convicts back home.

According to statistics, there are around 4,000 Moroccans in Italian prisons. Yet, Italian jails and prisons suffer from overcrowding.

The Italian Minister said that transferring prisoners abroad “can contribute to the government’s bid to confront the problem of Italian prison conditions,” following a visit to the EU last week.

For what concerns Morocco, the new law states that “no prisoner will be sent back to Morocco without giving their consent”, an Italian justice ministry spokesman told The Local, an English based Italian media outlet.

The same source reported that the agreement does not concern ” second-generation immigrants, born in Italy to Moroccan parents who cannot gain Italian citizenship until they are 18″.
