Fassi Fihri: Producing Electricity From Fuel Was A Mistake

Ali Fassi Fihri who runs the National Office of Electricity and Water (ONEP) has defended himself against the crisis situation that the state-owned department is facing; he claimed that he left the office in 2001 in a good financial position with a fiscal surplus, however upon his return in 2008, he found that the situation at said department has become difficult. This was reported by Alyaoum 24.

Mr Fassi Fihri has acknowledged before the finance committee at the House of Councillors that the office’s investments in establishing units to produce electricity using fuel was a mistake by pointing out that on a global basis, electricity is produced using gas instead of fuel, which is very expensive.

It is important to note that the debt of the department has reached 51.8 billion dirhams in addition to obligations to the internal pension fund that have amounted to 17.95 billion dirhams.
