The USA has carried out its first offensive airstrike against ISIS in militant positions near Baghdad as the beginning of an intensified action to fight ISIS militants.

The U.S. Air Force has been striking ISIS targets since August, but only for the purpose of protecting strategic and important sites and allowing humanitarian assistance to enter some areas.

The airstrikes were later confirmed by U.S. Central Command and were undertaken as part of the plan outlined by President Barack Obama to “degrade and ultimately destroy ISIS.”

According to the Central Command, six ISIS vehicles and an ISIS fighting position near Baghdad were destroyed.
