It took the Moroccan authorities more than 2 days to stop the fire that broke out last Friday in a forest in the surroundings of Tetouan, located north of Morocco.

Around 500 elements belonging to the Moroccan civil protection, the High Commission for Water and Forests and the Fight against Desertification, the Royal Armed Forces, the Royal Gendarmerie, Auxiliary Forces and local authorities were deployed, and they have spent more than 2 days in the surroundings to halt the fire.

Local media outlets said that many volunteers, especially from the fire-affected areas, were also seen helping the local authorities the way they could.

The fire raged on Friday in the region of Oued lil.

Early reports said that around 290 hectares of the said forest were ravaged after this sad event.

It is worth reminding that Morocco is highly prone to forest fires during Summer time, mainly due to the high temperature. However, it is highly probable that this forest fire broke out after that some tourists or locals carelessly tossed away hot coals from a barbecue, or at least threw a cigarette butt or something of the like, because the temperature wasn’t quite high last Friday.
