A leading Saudi Muslim scholar that goes by the name Bander Al-Khebri (video above) affirmed that “the earth does not move and that it does not turn around itself.”

The man seems not to be aware of the primary school scientific knowledge of gravity when saying that “if an airplane takes off from Jedda, en route to China, then it will never arrive to its destination if the earth is in a spherical form and keeps moving, because they  both [the airplane and the earth] are moving.”

The man, with a lot of guts, said that “We Muslims have also our own theories that prove that the earth is plate, and not spherical,” not knowing in the meantime that, as this article on the Independent states, “by the 9th century, many Muslim scholars took it for granted that the Earth was a sphere. The proof, said astronomer Ibn Hazm, ‘is that the Sun is always vertical to a particular spot on Earth”. It was 500 years before that realisation dawned on Galileo. The calculations of Muslim astronomers were so accurate that in the 9th century they reckoned the Earth’s circumference to be 40,253.4km – less than 200km out. The scholar al-Idrisi took a globe depicting the world to the court of King Roger of Sicily in 1139.”

The sheer absurdity of the man’s statement prompted some Muslims around the globe to make fun of the so-called Muslim scholar, insisting that 11 centuries after that Ibn Hazm and Al-Idrissi said the earth was in a spherical form, this ignorant devolved to the 5.B.C with such a statement.

Another Muslim was caught saying that “Al-Idrissi and Ibn Hazm must be tearing what is left of their remains from their bones after heard this.”
