Rabat, Morocco (TMT)- Morocco and Algeria’s military expenditure has spiked to a record high, as both North African countries cement their place among Africa’s largest arms customers.

The Swedish peace research institute SIPRI published last week its 2019 report, which sheds light, among others, on military expenditure around the world.

According to the Stockholm-based Institute, Algeria tops the ranking in Africa, with an annual expenditure of  US$ 10.3 billion.

The most important arms supplier for Morocco’s neighbor is Russia. Algeria has also acquired military equipment and armaments from Germany, the report says.

Morocco, on the other hand, ranked third in Africa, with approximately an expenditure of US$ 3.8 billion in 2019.

The most important arms suppliers for Morocco are the USA and France.
