Rabat, Morocco (TMT)- In order to prevent electricity price hikes that were projected to reach 43 percent, the government has made the decision to provide the National Office of Water and Electricity with a grant of 4 billion dirhams (equivalent to 400 billion centimes).

This comes amid the government allocating an extra 10 billion dirhams for the general budget in response to a challenging period characterized by the worst drought Morocco witnessed in the last 42 years, commitments to social dialogue, the crisis in Ukraine, and inflation.

The breakdown of this allocation is as follows:

  • 4 billion dirhams has been designated to the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE). This allocation serves to fulfill the government’s commitment for the year 2023 in order to prevent electricity price hikes that were projected to reach 43 percent.
  • To address the challenges posed by inflation and safeguard the purchasing power of citizens, a sum of 3.3 billion dirhams has been specifically allocated.
  • An allocation of 1.5 billion dirhams has been earmarked to cover supplementary expenses associated with the national program for water supply and irrigation spanning the period of 2020-2027.
  • The tourism sector’s roadmap for the years 2023-2026 will receive a substantial allocation of 1.2 billion dirhams, aimed at facilitating its implementation and growth.
