Rabat, Morocco (TMT)- A Moroccan parliamentarian is urging the Moroccan Minister of Energy Aziz Rabbah to waive off electricity and water consumption bills for poor Moroccans given the dire COVID-19 juncture, one that has sent the Moroccan economy teetering.

“Despite the critical situation that many poor Moroccan families are going through, as they can no more generate their daily income, they are now afraid that water and electricity will be cut as they are currently unable during this period to pay the bills,” Noureddine Kchibel, representing Morocco’s Justice and Development (PJD), a party leading the government coalition, said.

“A solution needs to be found to give relief to those poor Moroccans who cannot pay their electricity and water consumption bills,” Kchibel noted.

Kchibel suggested that “the slate needs to be wiped clean for this segment of the Moroccan population,” further noting that “as soon as everything goes back to normal, they can continue to pay their bills.”
