Rabat, Morocco (TMT)- The President of the Court of Auditors, Zineb El Adoui, has highlighted the “danger of the rising scourge of teacher absenteeism in Morocco,” pointing out that it “negatively affects students’ school time.”

During a joint plenary session between the House of Representatives and the House of Councilors, El Adoui stated that “the Court of Auditors had previously drawn attention to this phenomenon in a number of its reports on monitoring regional academies for education and training, as well as its previous annual reports.”

El Adoui also reported an increase in the number of unexcused absences, which rose by a total of 77% over four years between the academic years 2016/2017 and 2020/2021. She noted that the current evaluation system adopted by the Ministry of Education is primarily based on seniority in promoting teachers, without any assessment of performance. The negative impact of absenteeism is further exacerbated by this evaluation system, El Adoui stressed.
