Rabat, Morocco (TMT)- A report released yesterday by the National Council for Human Rights, a Moroccan human rights organization, said that 213 individuals on death row in Morocco have been granted a royal pardon since 2000, despite the constitutional right to life.

The report highlighted that calls to abolish the death penalty have been made, but new death sentences continue to be issued.

As of the end of 2022, there were 83 people on death row in Morocco, with final sentences issued against 54 of them. 15 individuals remain on death row pending appeal.

In its report, the National Council for Human Rights has urged Morocco to ratify the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, a protocol aimed at eliminating the death penalty.
