TANGIER, Morocco – On February 14, 2023, global furniture retailer IKEA inaugurated its second store in Morocco, underscoring the company’s successful expansion since overcoming a diplomatic hurdle in 2015. This opening of IKEA Cabo follows the success of the first store in Casablanca and demonstrates the firm’s growing influence in Morocco.

In 2015, the Moroccan government blocked the inauguration of IKEA’s first store in Casablanca, the largest IKEA investment in North Africa at the time, responding to Sweden’s potential recognition of the United Nations non-recognized Sahrawi Republic. This decision came just a few days before the official opening of the 22,000 m² complex.

Despite these initial obstacles, IKEA managed to surmount the controversy, and the Casablanca store has since seen great success, paving the way for further expansion in the country.

Fast forward to 2023, the newly inaugurated IKEA Cabo stands as a testament to the brand’s resilience and continued commitment to Morocco. The store is situated in the burgeoning commercial hub developed by Tanger Med Zones (TMZ) in the Northern region of Morocco, not far away from M’diq, Tetouan, and Martil.

The new store, spanning an impressive 18,000 m² with a commercial space of over 16,400 m², was inaugurated in the presence of distinguished guests, including the wali of the Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, the president of the Tanger Med Group, and the president of the Regional Council. Attendees embarked on a guided tour, exploring various exhibition, planning, and dining areas.

IKEA Cabo is home to a showroom, a Market Hall, and notably, IKEA’s first restaurant with a terrace in Morocco. The design prioritizes natural light and includes a unique glass-encased outdoor area to display outdoor furniture.

The establishment of IKEA Cabo, facilitated by a 400 million dirhams investment, has created 500 direct jobs and 1,000 indirect jobs, with locals constituting 90% of the workforce.

Going beyond commerce, IKEA Cabo strives to benefit the local community. The store has established partnerships with local authorities, universities, schools, and employment promotion agencies. The store also ensures full accessibility for people with reduced mobility and offers provisions for electric vehicle charging stations, reinforcing IKEA’s commitment to inclusivity and environmental sustainability.
