Animal rights activists rallied last Saturday in Rabat, Morocco, demanding an immediate ban on the inhumane killing of stray dogs.

The protest, organized by the Moroccan Society for Animal Protection, saw demonstrators lament the “merciless extermination of dogs and cats”.

The group called for an end to the alleged mistreatment, including killing, burning alive, poisoning, and drowning of these animals.

The society’s head, Ali Azeddine, advocated for legislative protection for animals and a special program for stray dogs’ capture, neutering, and vaccination.

Despite the Interior Ministry’s previous measures urging municipalities to stop using lethal force or toxic substances against stray dogs, activists assert the lack of effective implementation.

Morocco signed a related agreement in 2019, but local animal rights organizations claim the program is yet to be enforced.
