Shifts in Moroccan energy consumption patterns were highlighted in a report from the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development this week.

Diesel and gasoline use, which account for nearly half of the nation’s petroleum product intake, saw reductions of 6% and 5% respectively in 2022.

During the same year, Morocco’s overall petroleum product consumption hit 11.9 million tons, marking a 6% increase compared to 2021. This rise is mainly attributed to increased consumption of fuel oil, used in electricity and industry, and aviation fuel, both of which surged by 68%, with their usage reaching 1.7 million and approximately 656,000 tons, respectively.

Moreover, Moroccans’ consumption of butane gas, another significant component of the nation’s energy consumption, increased by 3% compared to 2021, with the total consumption reaching 2.77 million tons.

The ministry’s report, which was presented to the Infrastructure, Energy, Minerals, and Environment Committee of the House of Representatives, also underscored that the combined consumption of diesel and butane gas made up more than 70% of Morocco’s total petroleum product consumption in 2022.
