Renowned Moroccan journalist Ali Anouzla has been absolved of charges by the Moroccan Court of Appeal. The charges, associated with comments made about the Western Sahara region during an interview with BILD, initiated legal proceedings that have been underway since 2015 while Anouzla was ‘on bail’.

RABAT, MOROCCO – The Moroccan Court of Appeal has cleared noted journalist Ali Anouzla of charges related to “undermining national territorial integrity”.

The charges stemmed from a comment made by Anouzla during an interview with German newspaper, BILD, regarding the Western Sahara region.

Anouzla has consistently maintained that his words were misrepresented. He firmly denied calling Western Sahara a “colonized” region.

The court ruling came to light after Anouzla shared a Facebook story confirming his exoneration today.

The case has generated significant international attention.

Legal proceedings, which have been underway since 2015, have taken place while Anouzla has been on bail.
