The National Center for Blood Transfusion and Research in Morocco reported that the number of blood donors in the country increased to approximately 334,000 last year, with a total of 339,579 donations recorded in 2022. This reflects a 6% increase in donations compared to 2021, surpassing the annual target of 4%. The Center noted that Morocco requires over a thousand blood bags daily to achieve self-sufficiency in blood derivatives.
However, the blood donation rate in Morocco stands at 0.92%, just below the World Health Organization’s recommended rate of 1% necessary for self-sufficiency in blood derivatives. To boost these figures, the Center has adopted a policy of increasing blood donation units and has opened two new units. The initiative, part of a partnership between the public and private sectors, is designed to make blood donation services more accessible to Moroccans.
