Amina Bouayach, the head of Morocco’s state institution, the National Council for Human Rights, has called for decriminalizing consensual sexual relationships that take place in Morocco.

In an interview with Moroccan news website Al3omk, Bouayach emphasized the need to re-evaluate existing laws, stating, “It is no longer acceptable to imprison those who engage in consensual sexual relationships,” while maintaining that public spaces should not become venues for such engagements.

According to her, the Council has put forth 26 recommendations for penal code amendments, with the decriminalization of sex outside marriage as a prime one of them.
