The Moroccan football team suffered a defeat against South Africa in the African Nations Cup qualifiers on Saturday, June 17, 2023. Despite a goal from Hakim Ziyech in the 60th minute, the Moroccans were unable to overcome a two-goal deficit, ultimately losing 2-1.

The defeat came largely due to early mistakes, including a pivotal one by goalkeeper Munir El Kajoui, that allowed South Africa to take an early lead in the 5th minute. The Moroccan team’s offense was also largely ineffective throughout the first half, with the South Africans managing to add a second goal early in the second half.

In the post-match press conference, Moroccan national coach Walid Regragui conceded, “We were not good in the first half and we made a lot of mistakes,” while also acknowledging the speed of the South African players caused his team considerable trouble. “In the second half, the performance improved but in the end we lost and I congratulate the South African team on the victory,” Regragui said.

Regragui also pointed out the difficulties of playing matches in June, with the end of the football seasons and player fatigue playing a role. “You cannot ask the players for more than necessary,” he said. Despite the setback, Regragui vowed to learn from the loss and prepare better for the upcoming African Nations Cup.

With this defeat, the Moroccan team fell to second place in Group 11 with six points, while South Africa rose to the top of the standings with seven points.
