The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has reiterated its “full support” for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara at the United Nations’ 24th committee meeting. The UAE’s representative, Majid Khamis Al Ali, asserted UAE’s backing for what he described as “Morocco’s legitimate rights” and “just cause.”

The UAE diplomat also expressed support for the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco in 2007, which was described by the Security Council as “serious and credible.”

The diplomat welcomed the opening of 28 countries’ general consulates in the cities of Laayoune and Dakhla and praised Morocco’s efforts to improve the living standards of the Sahara local population.

These efforts are part of a new development model for the southern regions, launched by King Mohammed VI in 2015, aiming to enhance human development indicators in the region.
