Rabat – Abdellatif Ouahbi, Morocco’s Minister of Justice, said today that over 24,000 legal cases involving children were recorded last year in Morocco.

This high number has spurred a re-evaluation of how children who come into contact with the law are treated. The ministry is creating a comprehensive plan to protect children better, which will involve changing several legal aspects. These changes include revamping the penal code and the criminal procedure law, implementing alternative forms of punishment, and creating a dedicated children’s legal code.

Ouahbi also stated that the justice system plans to simplify how it deals with cases involving young people. The aim is to transform the current punitive system into one that focuses more on rehabilitation. This includes consideration of raising the minimum age for detention, reducing legal penalties for young offenders, and enhancing the use of therapeutic and rehabilitative measures.

According to Ouhbi, the Ministry is also looking into developing better monitoring systems for crimes involving children, analysing why these crimes occur, and using this information to shape the country’s legal policies.
