Leading Moroccan Economy news outlet Leconomiste said that the price of Diesel will increase by 49 centimes while the price of Gasoline will decrease by 12 centimes.
Those changes will go into effect starting from tomorrow, Wednesday the 16th.
According to Leconomiste, the reason behind this increase in the gasoline prices has nothing to do with the compensation system, especially that oil prices in the international market witnessed recently a slight decrease.
The decrease, as a matter of fact, is in relation with a previous governmental decision that aims at decreasing little by little state subsidies for oil products, deemed by the government as “costly and ineffective”, besides the fact that poor people, for which the compensation system was first created, benefit meagerly from this system.
This move, which may be perceived as a threat to households and to mainstream Moroccans’ budget, will allow the state to save nearly 7 billion dirhams. This huge amount of money will be laid out for new investments, a source from the government previously stated.
It is worth highlighting also that the government established an aid plan for professionals in the transport sector, who may suffer the most from such decision. In fact, owners of buses and taxis of 1st and 2nd category receive every quarter a monetary compensation, wired via Barid Al-Maghrib.
