According to Leconomiste, the Moroccan Ministry of Interior has agreed through a draft decree to give old taxi owners up to 80,000 dirhams to exchange their old Mercedes cars for a brand new home-made Dacia.

According to said source, only taxis that are 10 year-old or more would be eligible for the “cash for clunkers” program.

The taxis’ owners should give away in turn their taxis to the Moroccan authorities.

Some reports indicate that Renault Maroc is participating in the program as well through providing around 10,000 Dirhams per car.

It is worth highlighting that the “cash for clunkers program” came into existence just recently as a direct result of the increasing safety and environmental concerns the authorities have raised in regards to taxi owners using very old taxis. The Taxi cars in Morocco lag far away behind in terms of international driving safety measures.

Reports in Morocco indicate that there are 45,000 registered taxis in the country. Those taxis in question have an average age of 30 years.
