morocco floods nonchalence

Various Moroccans took to social media platforms, especially Twitter and Facebook, to laud of critics the engineers responsible for building the various roads and bridges that were easily swept away by the recent torrential rains and floods that hit the country.

Some Moroccans seem to have even resorted to dress a donkey with a construction hard hat, a high visibility orange vest and a pair of jeans, before fixing the poor animal face to face with a table and various architectural drawings.

Others, on the other hand, have criticized the Moroccan authorities for their nonchalance, lack of mobilization and support vis-à-vis the people afflicted by the floods, especially given the fact that the Moroccan government did not declare “mourning days” despite a death toll that is floating around 51.

Many Moroccans on social media said that “infrastructure corruption” is one of the main reasons behind the sweeping away of various bridges and roads in the south of the country.

The Moroccan Minister of Transport and Logistics Rebbah has indicated yesterday that the department of Management of Technical Affairs at his Ministry has been tasked to monitor closely the situation as “to determine the ones responsible for the drastic situation of Morocco’s infrastructure,” although stressing “that the priority is currently given to renovation and repair work.”
