Rabat, Morocco (TMT & Communiqué)-A communiqué from Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and cooperation said that Morocco was elected on Thursday, along with the Netherlands as co-chairman of the Global Forum for the Fight against Terrorism (GCTF).

“This decision, taken unanimously by the members of the GCTF at the 7th meeting of the Coordination Committee held in Doha on May the 7th, 2015, intervened to cap the commitment of Morocco to the activities of the Forum that today constitutes a fundamental pillar to the international architecture of the fight against terrorism,” the statement read.

The statement stressed that “this election shows the trust enjoyed by Morocco from the International Community and the recognition of the relevance of its multidimensional National strategy against terrorism.”

“The election is also of proof of the appreciation of the members of the GCTF for the active contribution of the Kingdom in various activities of the Forum and the achievement of its objectives based on a cooperative, inclusive approach that is oriented towards the implementation of the best practices to fight against terrorism,” the statement further noted.

The Global Forum for the Fight against Terrorism, consisting of over 100 members, brings regularly together policy makers and experts in key areas of the fight against terrorism whom are from different regions, the United Nations and other regional and multilateral organizations.

The activities of the Forum are organized around six working groups that are about the Sahel, the Horn of Africa, criminal justice and the rule of law, detention and reintegration, the fight against violent extremism and foreign terrorist fighters. What is also co-chaired by Morocco and the Netherlands since 2014.

It is worth reminding that Morocco and the Netherlands are replacing the United States of America and Turkey, two countries that have co-chaired the forum, since its unveiling in 2011.
