Rabat, Morocco (TMT)- Well known Moroccan intellectual Maati Monjib, professor of political history and African studies at the University of Rabat, told Moroccan paper Akhbar Al Yaoum in today’s edition that the Makhzen removed Abdellilah Benkirane, the secretary general of the PJD party, following this later refusing to play the role of a figurehead, a head of government without teeth.

“Benkirane’s refusal to be a figurehead is the reason that lead to his removing,” Moujib stressed.

Mounjib went on further to say that the political parties that created the political deadlock in Morocco are not independent, further noting that it was the palace that intervened in 2013 to include the RNI party in the government coalition after the back-then junior partner Al Istiqlal quit it.

Mounjib also said that the PJD party’s reaction, in the upcoming days, to the Royal Cabinet communiqué will be determining in revealing the way the king will tackle the situation further and how he’ll choose the next head of government in charge of forming a government coalition.
