Rabat, Morocco (TMT)- The Secretary-General of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP) Driss Lachgar said, in an interview given to Moroccan paper Akhbar Al Yaoum today, that the political bureau of his party was not aware of the content of the controversial draft bill 22.20, a bill that stirred a wave of condemnation in Morocco as many of its articles aim to muzzle the freedom of speech of Moroccans on social media platforms.

“Benabdelkader ( the Moroccan Minister of Justice, a member of the USFP party) did not share with us any information regarding the draft bill,” Lachgar said.

“But I need to stress that it is quite normal that he does not divulge such information as it is a government-related matter, not a USFP one,” Lachgar added.

“If the draft bill impinges the freedom of speech of every Moroccan, then it should be not accepted,” Lachgar said.

“However, this stance (of refusing the draft bill) should not be used by lobbyists (to lobby against products and call for their boycott),” Lachgar stressed.

“Today it is true, our party is divided into two clans, the pro-Benabdelkader, and others against him,” Lachgar noted.

It is worth reminding that the controversy sparked by the draft bill has triggered various members of the USFP political party to call for their party comrade, the Moroccan Minister of Justice Mohamed Benabdelkader, to step down.
