Rabat, Morocco (TMT)-The Xlinks project has secured new funding of $30 million to transport clean energy from Morocco to the UK through an undersea cable.

The project, which aims to be the world’s longest high-voltage direct current cable, has received a $25 million investment from the Abu Dhabi National Energy Company and $5 million from UK-based Octopus Energy.

Once completed by 2027, the Xlinks project will provide 3.6 GW of electricity, enough to power 7 million homes, or roughly 8% of the UK’s current electricity needs. The undersea cable will connect the UK and Morocco through Portugal, Spain, and France.

The project will generate renewable energy in the Moroccan desert through wind and solar power, which will then be transmitted via the undersea cable to the UK.

The Xlinks project will involve the use of a large land area of 150,000 hectares in the region of Guelmim-Oued Noun for clean energy production, creating a huge renewable energy hub in the region with a budget of around 250 billion dirhams.
