Morocco’s PM: we are in favor of exports, but priority is for the domestic market

Rabat, Morocco (TMT)- Morocco’s head of the government Aziz Akhenouch said that “Morocco is in favor of exports, but priority is for the domestic market.”

Akhenouch’s statement came on the sidelines of a speech he gave while attending the SIAM event (Salon International de l’Agriculture au Maroc), an annual international agricultural fair that takes place in Meknes, Morocco.

The statement came following a growing wave of frustration from the Moroccan population, amid a huge increase in the prices of agricultural products witnessed in the last few months, especially since the very same “Made in Morocco” products are being sold in European markets for lower prices.

Various Moroccans living in Europe shared images with their family members back home of such products on display in European supermarkets, drawing comparisons to the prices and asking questions about the puzzling disparity of prices.

This triggered various debates recently in the kingdom, with the subject amounting to a social moment du jour. Various journalists put in question “the agricultural politic” in Morocco, and whether the country “is no more a sovereign state, becoming a mere agricultural farm for Europeans,” as Hamid Mehdaoui, one of the most followed Moroccan journalists said on Youtube.
