Rabat, Morocco (TMT)- Eric Ciotti, the president of the French political party Les Républicains, expressed his firm support for the Moroccan autonomy plan to settle the conflict over Western Sahara.

Speaking at a press conference in Rabat after his three-day working visit to Morocco, Ciotti highlighted the important economic progress being made in the region. He declared that if he becomes the President of France, he would adopt the same position as the United States and recognize the Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara.

In addition, Ciotti called for initiatives to mend the recent misunderstandings between France and Morocco, acknowledging the indispensable friendship between the two countries.

He also praised Morocco’s important role in addressing immigration, acknowledging the country’s responsibility in assuming this burden. However, he also recognized that the fight against illegal immigration requires the economic development of southern countries, such as the promotion of the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline, which would help develop the region.

Ciotti’s visit and statements come amid strained political relations between France and Morocco in recent times.
