Casablanca, Morocco (TMT)- A devastating virus, identified by farmers as “mildew,” has destroyed over 500 hectares of tomato crops in the largest farms of Doukkala, located in the province of El Jadida.

The farmers said that they have incurred losses worth millions due to the destructive virus that starts by destroying the tomato grains and then its roots.

Despite the significant damage caused by the virus, the farmers claim that no governmental entity has provided support to salvage any of the crops.

The National Office for Food Safety and Health has taken samples from the tomatoes for analysis last March.

The farmers complain that the medicines that were previously used to treat the virus have been banned by the authorities, and alternative medicines are not available, leaving them without any help.

They appeal to the relevant authorities to provide support to the farmers who have suffered significant financial losses.
