Rabat, Morocco (TMT)- According to the National Water and Forest Agency, Morocco has suffered from nearly 500 forest fires in the past year, devastating around 22,762 hectares of forested areas.

Official data shows that 37% of the burnt areas were secondary grasses and seasonal plants.

Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima and Fez-Meknes regions were the most affected by the wildfires, with 188 and 99 fires respectively.

These regions have high forest cover density, dry climatic conditions, and increased human pressure on forest resources.

According to the Director General of the National Water and Forest Agency, Abdelrahim Homy, “the burnt areas in Morocco are minimal compared to similar countries and neighboring countries, despite the significant impact on the environment and wildlife.”
