Rabat, Morocco (TMT)- The National Council for Human Rights has reported an increase in violence against women in terms of the number of cases reported and the severity of the violence committed. The council attributes the escalation of this phenomenon to the lack of legal protection for women before and after violent acts.

The council’s annual report highlighted an increase in the number of complaints related to violence against women, which indicates the spread of a culture of reporting such violence. The report called for clear definitions of rape and sexual assault in criminal law as two sexual offenses that affect physical safety. There is a discrepancy between courts in adopting a set of similar actions due to the lack of clear definitions and the failure to criminalize certain acts. Additionally, the enforcement of protection measures, particularly in criminal cases, is limited.

The council also drew attention to the increasing impact of modern technology in the escalation of digital violence against women. Electronic violence accounts for 19% of all forms of violence against women, with an estimated 1.5 million women falling victim to digital violence in its various forms. Girls aged between 15 and 19 are particularly vulnerable, with digital violence accounting for 34% of all forms of violence against them, and women aged between 20 and 24 are also vulnerable, with digital violence accounting for 28% of all forms of violence against them.
