Rabat, Morocco (TMT)- The European Commission has castigated the “manipulative use of immigration as a tool of coercion,” citing the 2021 mass migration crisis that unfolded between Morocco and Spain. This event saw thousands of Moroccans, including minors, flood into Sebta, further exacerbating tensions between the two nations back in 2021.

Speaking at the European Defense and Security Summit in Brussels, the Vice-President of the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas, said noted “the unconscionable deployment of immigration as a weapon by authoritarian regimes.” He drew attention to the disturbing events that unfolded on the borders of the city of Sebta in 2021.

Schinas highlighted that “the exploitation or use of immigration as a means to attack the European Union represented a new and unprecedented type of hybrid threat.” He underscored the importance of “developing strategies to counter such tactics.”

The Greek politician cautioned that the threats facing the European Union were multifaceted and complex. He singled out the use of immigrants as one of the many threats that the Union needed to address.
