Morocco’s Competition Council Urges Companies to Cease Imposing Additional Charges for Online Payments

Rabat, Morocco (TMT)- In a recent statement, the Competition Council of Morocco has called upon companies operating in various economic sectors to put an end to the practice of imposing an extra charge of 3 dirhams on citizens for online bill payments.

The council said it” strongly believes that these additional costs place an undue burden on consumers’ purchasing power and create barriers to fair market competition.”

The Competition Council said “It has come to their attention that certain companies have been levying fees for online bill payment services, in addition to the actual amount due. While these companies may benefit from the cost-saving advantages of online payment methods, passing on these supplementary costs to consumers is deemed unwarranted and has a detrimental effect on competition within the digital marketplace.”

The council noted that such practices “not only impede consumers’ ability to make purchases but also hinder the growth and development of Morocco’s digital economy.”

They emphasize that “these actions run contrary to the country’s national strategy, which aims to foster the advancement of the digital sector.”

Morocco’s Competitive Council “strongly urged the companies involved to discontinue these practices promptly.”
