A member of the Justice and Development parliamentary Group in the House of Representatives, Naima El Fethaoui, called on the Minister of Agriculture, Marine Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forests, Mohammed Sadiki, to take action in order to protect the Argan tree against the threats posed by the climatic conditions that Morocco is undergoing.

El Fethaoui, in a written question addressed to Minister Sadiki, stated that “the Argan tree, native to Morocco, faces challenges due to recurrent drought seasons, soil erosion, climate change, and human factors, not to mention the increase in the prices of raw materials”.

The parliamentarian, a member of the party that lead the previous two government coalitions, noted that “the living environment of the Argan tree plays a role in enhancing the adaptation of the local population, achieving food security, promoting gender equality, and providing job opportunities”.

She cited figures from the Cooperatives Development Office, stating that “the number of cooperatives involved in the production of Argan oil in Morocco is around 655, and it includes more than 10,000 women,” warning about any negative repercussions on the ecosystem, due to the aforementioned factors (recurrent drought seasons, soil erosion, climate change, etc.)
