Morocco’s Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, has expressed serious concerns about the country’s water management.

In the past five years, Morocco has seen 6.5 billion cubic meters of water wasted into the sea, with the last year, one of the driest since 1945, contributing 700 million cubic meters to this total.

Since September alone, an additional 300 million cubic meters of water have been lost. The minister emphasized the need for improved connections between water basins to halt this wastage and combat the chronic drought that has affected the nation over the past five years.

He highlighted the potential water supply crises in major cities like Rabat and Casablanca due to the significant deficits in the Bouragrag and Oum Rabie basins. Delays in seawater desalination projects further compound the issue.

To alleviate pressure on the Al-Massira Dam, which is currently operating far below capacity, Baraka proposed a focus on projects linking water basins.
