Extreme drought in Morocco
In 2022, Morocco faced an unprecedented 83% water deficit, marking its driest year since the end of the second world war.

RABAT- The Minister of Water and Equipment, Nizar Baraka, unveiled during a presentation in Rabat on Monday that “2022 marked the driest year since 1945 for Morocco.”

Baraka unveiled this unsettling information and noted that compared to the average annual intake, Morocco’s water resources were in a 83 percent deficit, a new record low since World War 2.

According to him, this led to an alarming 83% deficit in the country’s dams, an unprecedented situation in Moroco’s modern history.

Baraka stressed that this deficit represents “a stark decrease in water resources, calculated at roughly 1,989 million cubic meters during the 2021-2022 fiscal year. This scarcity in water supply significantly surpasses the previous year’s deficit, which was already concerning at 62%.”

Amid the same presentation, Baraka complained about “the excessive exploitation of groundwater in Morocco,” noting that 80 percent of wells and boreholes are operating illegally, without a license.
