According to the Moroccan Minister for Education, Abdel Latif Miraoui, a government-backed reform of the medical sector is underway.

Measures include increasing the number of accepted students in medical colleges by a third and opening three new medical colleges in Rachidia, Guelmim, and Beni Mellal.

The country aims to increase the number of health professionals to 35 per 10,000 inhabitants by 2030, up from the current 17.4 per 10,000.

Additionally, the concept of reducing the education period from seven to six years has been proposed.

The state spends 142,000 dirhams yearly to train every doctor.

However, the proposal was met with criticism from students, particularly the decision to reduce the education period and the demand for “international accreditation” – membership in a global Francophone association dubbed SIDMEF – intended to facilitate international recognition of the degrees.
