Rabat, Morocco (TMT)- 11 people, including 10 kids, passed away this morning while swimming in Oued Cherrat, located 7kms away from the city of Skhirat, in a region well-known in Morocco for its beautiful beaches.

The Moroccan Royal Gendarmie, section of Skhirat, was only able to recover 7 bodies while searches are ongoing to find four others missing.

Among the dead is 16-year-old Fadoua El Ouardi, who won Morocco’s Taekwondo national championship recently.

The group was composed of 45 people, including a bus driver,  a Teakouando coach and others, originally from Benslimane and all belonging to the “Noor Tekouando Club.”

They were on a one-day-excursion to Bouznika. Sadly the bus driver and 10 other kids passed away.

The high death toll has even prompted Morocco’s Interior Minister, Mohamed Assad, to head to the scenes.

According to various local reports, the beach section where the kids and the bus driver drowned was “a strictly forbidden to swim in section,” yet was probably overlooked by the group, including the bus driver, due to their foreignness to the region and to their relatively-young-age.

An investigation is being carried out to unveil more about this very sad story.
