French automobile carmaker Renault plans on building a new factory in Tangier, which will be dedicated exclusively to manufacturing engines and that will help serve the strong local demand.

Renault has the capacity to assemble about 400000 vehicles annually in Morocco.

The announcement was made by Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn at the “Mondial de l’automobile” in Paris. The goal is to feed the assembly lines of Dacia, which are currently provided by the facility located in Spain. The main goal from this is to minimize costs even more and have everything nearby.

Managing Director of competitiveness at Renault Group Thierry Ballore said: “We’re thinking about it, but we must first have a greater supply in the field.”

The Renault plant in Tangier could eventually benefit from a transfer of the production of the Romanian plant of Pitesti. The manufacturer has previously warned that if strikes continued, it would not hesitate to transfer production to Morocco.
