Rabat, Morocco (TMT)- The Moroccan authorities said a doctor and his assistant have been arrested in Meknes on suspicion of carrying out illegal abortions.
The suspects were apprehended while attempting to perform an abortion on a 15-year-old girl in a private clinic, in the presence of her mother and another woman.
The authorities said the suspects are currently being held in provisional detention while the authorities investigate the case and determine all the details and criminal acts involved.
Abortion is generally illegal in Morocco, except in cases where the mother’s life is at risk.
There are currently efforts to reform the law to expand access to safe and legal abortion under other circumstances, such as in cases of rape, incest, or fetal abnormalities.
Private clinics in Morocco may carry out abortions in practice, but usually under clandestine circumstances and with potential safety risks. Individuals who perform illegal abortions in the country may be subject to criminal charges and imprisonment.
