Rabat, Morocco (TMT)- Moroccan scientists have made a groundbreaking discovery just a few days ago – a prehistoric crocodile from the Jurassic period, which lived between 201 and 145 million years ago.

This discovery will  put Morocco on the map for researchers and scientists alike. The crocodile, known as “Teleosaurus,” was only partially, randomly, found in 2017 by the Moroccan Association for Exploration and Mountain Tourism. The discovery of a small part of the skull prompted scientists to start searching for the full skull. At the time, the type of crocodile was not 100% clear due to the limited remains found. However, during the recent discovery, the type was finally pinpointed.

The discovery is an important contribution to the geological map of North Africa and is expected to attract more attention to the cave where the fossils were found. The cave is located in the Atlas Mountains in the Smi’ya region of Taza province.
