Concerns Raised Over Elevated Pesticide Levels in Wheat Imports to Morocco

Rabat, Morocco (TMT) – Several European Union countries have recently halted their importation of wheat and animal feed from Ukraine due to the presence of high levels of pesticides that exceed the permissible limits set by the EU. These developments have raised concerns among food security activists and Moroccan parliamentarians, given the significant volume of wheat and animal feed that Morocco imports from Ukraine to offset the domestic supply shortfall.

In response to these concerns, Moroccan MP Mustapha Ibrahimi has called on the Minister of Agriculture Mohammed Sadiki to provide clarification and share information about the measures being taken to ensure the safety of imported wheat and animal feed. Specifically, he has inquired whether Morocco’s National Office of Food Safety (ONSSA) has conducted investigations into the presence of elevated levels of pesticides in imported products and compared the results to the established national standards for permissible amounts of pesticides in such products.

Additionally, MP Ibrahimi has asked about the measures that the Ministry intends to adopt should the analytical results confirm the presence of similar forbidden pesticides to those that led to the suspension of imports by some EU member states, including Slovenia.
