Morocco Faces Decrease in Grain Production Amidst Water Shortage and Unfavorable Rain Pattern

Rabat, Morocco (TMT)- Morocco’s Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries has released a worrying prediction that the country’s grain production will decrease due to inadequate rainfall.

The current agricultural season has witnessed unstable temperatures, with low minimums in February and March and high maximums in April. However, the season has seen lower precipitation than usual, with cumulative rainfall of 207 mm, which is a 36% decrease compared to a typical year and a 13% increase from the previous season. This unfavorable weather pattern, coupled with a delay in the first rains and a significant water shortage, has adversely impacted the distribution of crops.

The 2022-2023 season is expected to see a production of 55.1 million quintals of the three primary grains, representing a 62% increase from the previous season’s production of 34 million quintals. This production is expected to come from a total area of 3.67 million hectares, which is a 2.8% increase from the previous season.

The ministry has pointed out that 82.9% of the national production comes from four specific regions, namely Fes-Meknes, Rabat-Sale-Kenitra, Casablanca-Settat, and Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima.
