Taroudant, Morocco (TMT)- A truck driver caused material damage to a historical gate in Taroudant after attempting to enter the gate with a large excavator, resulting in damage to the sides of the gate.

The director of the Ministry of Culture in Taroudant was caught frustrated and sad. He expressed his regret over the incident and emphasized that preserving the architectural heritage of Taroudant is the responsibility of everyone, not just institutions.

The gate is part of the historical wall of Taroudant, which is about 7.5 kilometers long and has seven gates to facilitate movement. It is the third-longest wall globally, after the Great Wall of China and the Kumbhalgarh Fort Wall in India.

The gate dates back to the reign of Sultan Mohammed al-Sheikh during the Saadi dynasty.

The director of the Ministry of Culture said he will “inform the regional heritage governorate to examine the gate and put an end to what he described as recklessness and disregard for heritage.”
